While this may not be Sonic, it most certainly is a hedgehog. Most famously know for its prickly spined exterior the hedgehog is actually born with its spines lying just under the skin as they don't "sprout" until 2 to 3 days after they are born. When threatened, hedgehogs will roll into a tight ball, protecting their face, eyes, limbs, and bellies. Hedgehogs also have very sensitive senses of smell and hearing. It's no wonder Sega chose this tough creature as its super skilled protagonist.
